U.S. Soccer Introduces Stronger Referee Abuse Prevention Policy
In a significant move to protect referees and promote a culture of respect within the sport, U.S. Soccer has unveiled its updated Referee Abuse Prevention Policy, effective March 2025. This policy aims to address and prevent mistreatment of referees at all levels of the game, ensuring a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone involved.
The revamped policy establishes stricter penalties for abusive behavior, including verbal abuse, physical intimidation, and harassment. Offenses against referees who are minors will carry even harsher consequences, with a “minor multiplier” resulting in triple punishment. U.S. Soccer emphasizes the importance of education for players, coaches, and spectators on appropriate conduct to foster a respectful atmosphere.
Kari Seitz, U.S. Soccer’s first Vice President of Refereeing, has been instrumental in driving these changes. Seitz, who has a wealth of experience officiating at the highest levels, including four Women’s World Cups and three Olympics, is committed to growing the nation’s corps of referees and changing the culture surrounding the game.
